Bairro Alto & Chiado
Two neighbourhoods, two very different personalities. Chiado invites days spent boutique-shopping, gallery-hopping and lingering in literary cafes. Its more rakish, party-loving neighbour is Bairro Alto, a tangle of lanes harbouring dozens of shabby-chic shops, late-night bistros and hole-in-the-wall bars. Swinging south, Cais do Sodré has reinvented itself from red-light district to nightlife hub.

Top SightConvento do Carmo
Soaring ethereally above Lisbon, the Convento do Carmo, founded in 1389, was all but devoured by the 1755 earthquake. Its shattered pillars and wishbone-like arches are completely exposed to the elements. The Gothic nave collapsed on worshippers when the earthquake struck. The 19th-century taste for romantic ruins meant it was never restored, and it later became the archaeology museum you see today.
