Central Glasgow

Glasgow’s centre changes character east to west, going from a frenetic blend of services, transport terminals, pubs and shops to more sedate terraces of thoroughfares like Bath St, where upmarket offices sit over basements converted into stylish bars. Much of the city’s quality accommodation clusters here. It’s also a student zone, with a nightlife nexus on Sauchiehall St, which runs the length of the neighbourhood.

The grid layout and pedestrian streets of the city centre make it easy to get around, and there are numerous cafes and pubs that make good pit stops between attractions. You may want to mentally divide the downtown area into an eastern and western half. There’s more to see in the west – where Mackintosh at the Willow, the damaged Glasgow School of Art and the nightlife of Bath and Sauchiehall Sts are key drawcards – but the east has more urban energy and life on the street. Quality restaurants and cafes are scattered through the whole area and there are numerous cultural venues.
