Preface
Everybody says he or she wants peace, unity, and progress for humankind; nobody wants war and anarchy, yet they keep happening. Why? What are your beliefs? What roles do they play in maintaining peace or, are they the reasons why we have such hostilities in the world? At this stage of human development, one would think that all these religious wars, hatred, and other problems are just reenactments of what happened thousands of years ago. Lamentably, they are not. We are still tearing ourselves apart over beliefs that don’t comport with reality. People are still bitter enemies instead of good friends; people haven’t yet grown as they should.
Religion has always been an albatross around the neck of common humanity, but now that its members have access to modern weapons, it has become a grave danger to peace and oneness on earth. Almost every month, you are likely to hear of mass shootings or other criminal activities carried out in an attempt to intimidate society into acquiescing to religious ideologies. The whole world is now a battlefield; a religious conflict in one part could generate a quick response thousands of miles away. These religious people, of different sects and beliefs, are using everything within their power to destroy any entity they see as an obstacle in their quest to achieve their respective ambitions. They often commit their crimes while hiding behind civil liberties and the assumption that the world is too civilized, too lenient to overreact or respond.
These fundamentalists keep viewing any evaluation or simple discussion about their religion as an attack on their whole culture. In my opinion, their culture has been striving long before religion became a part of it and soiled it somehow. For them to not able to separate religion from other aspects of their lives, is sad. Members of each sect believe that their respective book is divinely revealed; it is a book that contains the ultimate truth. Therefore, repudiating it, being lackadaisical about it, or even talking about in a nonreverent way, constitutes an abomination of the highest order. You can thus see how easy extremism can result from this. Anybody or group (within or outside their circle) whom they feel is disrespectful to this “divine” way of life, becomes an enemy, and there is no more pious way to worship “God” than to destroy his enemies.
The big guys in each group go through all kinds of clandestine means to fund their foot soldiers who are in a fierce competition to see which group is more radically evil to inflict pains on innocent people and disrupt activities. Each group will validate its sadistic action as the necessary response to the vicious action of the other group; tit-for-tat will continue unabated. No group is doing any self-reflection; nobody is eager to deal with the root causes of this acrimonious relationship. Nobody is willing to face the fact that his or her fervent religious beliefs are the root causes of the problems. None of them wants to hear anyone or anything that points out the severe contradictions in his or her tenets.
If not for the chaos and hatred, which religion proliferates on earth, anybody could have easily classified it as a relic deemed irrelevant in today’s world. Unfortunately, it is still important to those who want to remain the enemy of peace and unity; it is still important to those who wish to keep dehumanizing, categorizing, and destroying themselves; it is still a lucrative avenue to those who want to lie, deceive, and spread propaganda.
It is disappointing that many governments are still in cahoots with religion. They need to understand that a very good start to regaining sanity in the world is for their roles in religion to be reduced to zero. This is the time governments ought to start spearheading programs that will undo the religious brainwashing of our kids. This is the time they ought to address the lack of economic opportunity, which allows many people to have time to waste on religion.
If we decide to chronicle the long history of religious intolerance and sectarian violence that still plague us today, it could be a thousand-page long. The suffering of women and children in the upheaval is another poignant category that could fill many pages. It is sad to know that people still try hard to control an entity that can think for herself, rather than relating to her on a friendly and reasonable level. I’m sure the God of the universe never asked us to tramp on anyone’s basic freedom.
Religious people want things to stay the same, which is another way of saying we want to continue treading on individuals’ fundamental rights. They work hard to make sure their views are not challenged or deserted. Some groups use many tactics—from family rejection to loss of life—to make it difficult for any likely dissenter. Regrettably, some members who are brave enough to embrace “secularism” are sometimes bunged into shame and hopelessness due to the cold hands of prejudice, discrimination, and antipathy in the mainstream world. In some cases, they observe the uneven handed approach applied by their governments in dealing with internal and external issues. At any rate, once you abandon religion, don’t let these adverse social issues send you back to religion; discuss them peacefully, instead. Also, to those who are still engulfed by grievance-based ideology, there is no excuse to kill or terrorize people at any place. Follow a good example, not a bad example. What is wrong is wrong whether you do it unto anyone for whatever reason or anyone does it unto you for whatever reason.
Apart from the above issues, I wrote this book to remind people not to deal with one another on the basis of ‘I’m-this-you’re-that, I’m-chosen-you’re-unchosen, God-asks-us-to-do-this-God-asks-us-to-do-that.’ It is time to let go of old bitter rivalry and old bitter grudges. It is time to end the dangerous ideology of arguing a point based on us versus them, east versus west, instead of simply on the face value a...
