A Discussion On Chinese Patent Medicine “Mini Lecture No. 1”

Many of the patent medicines from China come in various forms. Let’s review some of the most popular forms available, they are:

1. Tablets (which are coated and un-coated).

2. Concentrated pills (some of the pills are honey pills and water-honey pills).

3. Syrups

4. Plasters (mostly adhesive type).

5. Injection (which on occasion may require a skin test for any possibility of an allergic reaction).

6. Granules (usually dissolved in hot water to make a tea).

7. Capsules (which are generally used when the medicine cannot be made into pills or tablet form).

The tablet form is generally absorbed into the body faster than the concentrated pills. A rule of thumb is that one dose of 4 tablets will equal one honey pill.

Concentrated pills are generally round and very hard on the outside coating. The coating is usually mixed from one of the herbal ingredients that are in the formula. These pills are concentrated and because of the concentration, a person will generally only have to take a few pills at a time. Remember, these pills absorb moisture very easily, so please try to keep the pills away from any moisture.

Syrups are generally sweet tasting but the medical action from the syrup is somewhat slower than pills or tablets. Also, it should be mentioned that some syrups may contain 10% to 20% alcohol. However, the children’s syrups do not contain alcohol, or if they do, it is a very small amount. There are also some manufacturers that are producing some syrup without any alcohol whatsoever.

Plasters are usually combined into an adhesive medicinal formula. None of the plasters are ever to be applied to an open wound. Plasters are required to be reapplied, according to the directions, for a specific ailment. Note: some of the adhesive plasters may cause an allergic reaction to some individuals.

The injection form has to meet rigid quality control, strict standards and sterile procedures. The injection form works very rapidly on the patient. At times a skin test is required to determine if the patient is in fact allergic to the solution.

The granule form of herbal medicine is arrived at by using herbal extracts and powders which are dried in granule form. These granules are then placed in hot water, made into a tea and ingested.

Capsules are generally used when the medicines cannot be put into pill or tablet form. The herbal medicine is placed in a clear capsule and can be swallowed with water. The medicine in the capsules is very easily absorbed into one’s body.

There are some other forms that are used to deliver patent medicine, but the ones that are mentioned here are the most popular. Suffice to say that in order to make this oriental medicine information “easy” to understand, the information offered will be limited to specifics and importance.

Since most of the Chinese patent medicine taken around the world is usually in pill form, you can say that the medicine “looks like little red, white, black and brown pills.” And, you would be right. These pills are concentrated and they clearly are a very effective way to take your medicine, rather than going to a Chinese pharmacy and buying all the raw herbs, weighing them, mixing them and then taking the medicine. Some of the patent medicine formulas will work very quickly but there are other herbal medicines that will take some time to work. Western drugs are expected to work very quickly, but in Chinese medicine, especially of you are treating a chronic illness, the results may take awhile. The herbal medicine might take some time to make the proper changes in your body. It is not uncommon for a person to take a Chinese patent medicine for 3 to 4 weeks and sometimes longer to receive the satisfactory results. The raw Chinese herbs will work faster than the patent medicine in pill form, but the patent medicine is much easier and convenient to take. In addition, as the medicine works slowly and effectively in your body, this will certainly give you time to actually see how the medicine is working to clear up your health problem. And, remember when you’re taking Chinese patent medicines there are many that really work as “tonics” and these tonics work like a vitamin. They can be taken over a long term to improve your health, vitality, well-being and longevity.

But as with any medicine, it is important to remember that when you use Chinese medicine, be consistent when you take the remedy and be certain that you only take the medicine as recommended in the packaging or on the bottle. Cholesterol Levels

“Mini Lecture No. 4”

Let’s take an example and discuss a medical condition that afflicts many people worldwide. High cholesterol. But, what is “high LDL cholesterol?”

In easy terms, high LDL cholesterol can be described as a “bad” type of cholesterol. This bad cholesterol usually sticks to the inside of one’s arterial walls. Eventually this will cause a hardening of the arteries, better known as arteriosclerosis.

What is “low HDL cholesterol?” When a person has a low concentration of the “good” HDL, this usually is a good indication that there may be some cardiovascular disease present. The HDL works to clear the bloodstream of LDL “bad” cholesterol. Generally when one has a high cholesterol condition, fatty deposits will build up in the blood and cause a narrowing in the arterial walls. Thus, pressure builds up. For this problem there are a number of very good Chinese medicines that significantly reduce ones high cholesterol levels. You will find a few select herbs in this Chinese medicine regimen program to treat this particular condition.

In addition to the Chinese herb formula for this condition it should be fair to mention that there are many herbs and different natural supplements that can actually lower the LDL “bad” cholesterol. However, it appears that there is currently only one food source that can be attributed to raising a person’s HDL, “good” cholesterol levels. That food source is grape seed oil, and it takes very little to raise the HDL levels. In fact, there are now some vitamin supplement manufacturers placing grape seed extract and/or oil in their vitamin supplement formula. When using the natural grape seed oil, less than one ounce daily will usually do the job and in some vitamin supplement formulas you will possibly find 150-300 mg. of the oil and/or extract.
