This writing is dedicated to two men of God. These men have had a profound impact on my spiritual walk with Christ. Yes, their physical time that they were able to spend influencing me for the cause of Christ was rather limited, but with God, who provides the increase, it was definitely quality time spent. What they sowed into my life will echo in eternity for those whose lives God will be touched through me.
With that said, this is a call out to Gary Grayban and his wonderful wife, Dottie. In February of 2018, the company that I was working for changed directions slightly. The job that I had been hired to do now had gone away. I quickly started the hunt for a new job; I remembered that Facebook was advertising about a job fair in Pascagoula, Mississippi, for designers at the shipbuilding company there. Timing is everything, so Laura and I planned for the trip down from Oklahoma. My attitude is that even if I were to find the perfect job there, if we could not find a perfect church that we could step right into and start serving our God, then no matter how much they paid me, it would not be perfect. I did a search on the computer and found two that might do the job. Their statement of faith was in line with ours, and so I called down and spoke with the receptionists there. I asked for the person who heads up the altar prayer ministries. At the Oasis Church, I was directed to Gary. Let me say, speaking with Gary was like we were at a class reunion! You would have thought we knew each other for decades. Although he was decades my senior, it seemed we walked out our spiritual and natural lives together. We both worked at Rocketdyne, just not at the same time, he in the â60s and â70s while me in the â80s and â90s. He also worked at Hughes Aircraft roughly during the time that my father had also worked there. In the late â80s, when I would commute on the Highway 101 to Rocketdyne, I would listen to Pastor Jack Hayford from The Church on the Way on the radio, Pastor Jack was Garyâs personal pastor. Both of our current individual churches are in line with Pastor Robert Morris of the Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas. We would talk for hours about how Godâs grace is so powerful and His guiding hands were so strong but so gentile.
The time came to head down to Mississippi. The job listing that was posted, I felt that I was a shoe in. I know the software programsâhey, I have designed airplanes. I can design ships, and we just use different gauges of metal, right? I found a good church, and now all it took was to land the job. We drove down and met Gary and his wife, Dottie, for dinner; a bonus was meeting their daughter, Lori, and her husband and children. It just seemed like if you looked at Laura and I and projected us out in twenty years, this would be us, personified in the persons of Gary and Dottie! How could this be? Well, during dinner, it came out that both Gary and Dottie were from Patterson, New Jersey, the same hometown that Lauraâs father, Joe, grew up in. Just way too many coincidences for to be coincidence.
The next day was the interviews. I firmly believe that I nailed both that I had. Both hiring managers were impressed with the rĂ©sumĂ© and indicated that they were passing it on to the next level. We went to dinner with Gary and Dottie againâwhat a delight sharing life and lifeâs stories with these saints of God. As we were departing for Oklahoma, Gary confided in us that he had not been feeling himself lately. We felt it an honor that such a man of God would confide in us, so quickly.
Well, back in Enid, Oklahoma, we received the sad news that I did not get the jobs. Never mind, we were very blessed to have found a brother and sister in Christ that we identified so well with. Over the course of the next few months, we continued to stay in contact with Gary and Dottie. Garyâs health continued to decline, and the doctors were at a little of a loss as to what it was that was attacking Gary. We would pray with him on the phone, and I would text him scriptures that God gave me for him. No matter what his day was like, he continued to walk this walk of faith and would not give Satan any glory. He would not give in to the symptoms of the day. He continued confessing Godâs Word over his life and his body. This man of faith never wavered in his faith to his God, the Father and Creator of the universe. I am still in awe of his love for our Father. In life, he was known professionally as a nuclear physicist; we knew him as a strong man of God who never wavered in faith. Although we only met in person twice, we spent hours on the phone; he was truly a lifelong mentor to me, if only for a year on this earth together. In February we celebrated his passing on to Jesus. From one rocket scientist to a nuclear physicist, your life on this earth was but a segment, and my segment only overlapped your segment for a brief time, but with God, our individual segments are but just a brief moment on the ray that is our individual existence in eternity. I look forward in spending some of eternity with you my brother Gary Grayborn. Godspeed, Gary. He won his battle against ALS and is dancing with Jesus!
There is an old TV commercial that went something like this, âWhen EF Hutten speaks, everybody listens.â Well, when Rex Parnell speaks, even the demons listen! After we started attending World Harvest Church, we were invited to attend the prayer and healing class on Monday nights in February of 2016. There the matriarchs and patriarchs of the church taught on The Believers Authority from the book by Kenneth E. Hagin as well as others on healings and other miracles. The matriarchs and patriarchs like Anita Sewell, Don and Wanda Walker, Rex and Wilma Parnell, Martha Counce and Nelda Butkhreart were the primary sources of mentorship. During class we would hear of the tails of when Anita, Rex, and Wilma returned from Uganda after having spent three weeks preaching there. Hearing of the power of God working through these saints was very faith-building. Hearing of the healings of the blind, the lame walking, and even the raising of the dead was truly awe-inspiring. Listening to these pillars of faith became something that Laura and I long for each week and still do!
The main thing that this class was different from other classesâwe learned and practiced as we went. We prayed each Monday for different people to receive healing, and God...
