Module 1

COMFORT - The Model

As I have already mentioned, the philosophy behind this book is simplicity, and whilst I will go into some detail about the functions of all of the parts of the model, there are essentially three things to remember when applying the System :-
Stage 1. Communicate appropriately - Ensure that the individual fully understands what needs to be done.
Stage 2. Ensure that the appropriate level of Observation, Monitoring, and Feedback is in place. This is where the work goes in and the Reward is huge.
Stage 3. Ensure that you Review, and ensure that the appropriate next steps are taken i.e., reinforcement/recognition, training/re-training, re-setting, or setting new tasks/objectives.
It looks easy, doesn't it? Well, it is, once learned, practiced, and adopted as a fundamental behaviour.
We will now break these three stages down into each of the elements of the COMFORT model and look at them in detail.
NB. A very interesting and important point to note here is that, as this model has been designed to be used at all levels of management and for every Performance situation, what you will notice as we progress through is that the System will remain constant throughout no matter what the situation is. What will differ is the activity, level of formality, and communication style you adopt.

COMFORT - The Model

Stage 1. - 'C' - Communicate appropriately -

Ensure that the individual fully understands what needs to be done.
Stage 1 is usually our starting point.
Before you can Monitor someone and give them quality Feedback, firstly, you must ask yourself, "Do I have the right to Monitor and provide Feedback to this person?"
In other words:
"Have they been trained and validated?"
"Am I 100% Satisfied that they have been fully briefed on what they have to do?"
"Have I ensured that they have the tools to do the job?"
"Have I ensured that they understand and agree on the Measurement of the task?"
"Have I ensured that they understand the Instruction?"
"Have they agreed with the Objective?"
The above is fundamental. It is critical. You cannot think about moving to Stage 2 unless you have completed the work in Stage 1.
You cannot critique somebody's work or give structured Feedback if you have not correctly trained, briefed, or instructed them nor if you have not agreed to clear Objectives or Measures.
So, Stage 1 is about laying the foundation upon which you can Manage Performance.
Stage1 is a huge part of the System and it is also where we can clearly see the differing levels of application:
  • The New Recruit. What do they need at Stage1? Firstly, they need basic training. Then they require more detailed training and this needs to be validated or "signed-off" so that you are Satisfied that they are fully competent.
  • The Experienced Person. This person needs clear and appropriate communication and instruction. If it is a new task, then they will obviously need training and validation.
  • The Poor Perfor...
