In diesem Buch geht der Autor der Frage nach, inwiefern sich die beiden Dramen Dorothea Angermann und Vor Sonnenuntergang Gerhart Hauptmanns von ihren VorgĂ€ngern unterscheiden und wie sie sich literaturgeschichtlich einordnen lassen. Die beiden Schauspiele wurden von Hauptmann zur Zeit der ersten deutschen Demokratie der Weimarer Republik verfasst und behandeln neben den individuellen UmstĂ€nden einzelner Figuren die sozialen, politischen und gesellschaftlichen VerhĂ€ltnisse ihrer Zeit. Im Mittelpunkt steht das etablierte BĂŒrgertum. Verbindungslinien zum bĂŒrgerlichen Trauerspiel Lessings, Schillers, Lenz, Klingers usw. und dem sozialen Trauerspiel Helds und Halbes verdeutlichten, dass Hauptmann sich durchaus an seinen VorgĂ€ngern orientiert. Er schafft mit seinem sozialen Trauerspiel aber eine ganz eigenwillige Dramenform, die dem BĂŒrgertum seiner Zeit unangenehme Fragen stellt und unbequeme Wahrheiten vor Augen fĂŒhrt. Schweissinger weist nach, dass die beiden Dramen Hauptmanns weder als klassische Tragödien noch als bĂŒrgerliche Trauerspiele oder soziale Dramen klassifiziert werden können, stattdessen nach eigenen Definitionen verlangen.
