Au cours des dernières décennies, le concept de complexité a bénéficié d'un intérêt croissant et ce, dans un large éventail de disciplines scientifiques, dont les sciences du langage. En français, la notion de complexité connaît un essor important avec la naissance de la grammaire scolaire au XIXe siècle et les études des rapports logiques au sein de la phrase dite « complexe ». Dans des descriptions portant aussi bien sur le français L1 que L2, la complexité réfère donc souvent à la construction d'unités phrastiques. Elle en arrive à désigner la constitution interne de syntagmes ou de séquences de mots, et certaines approches l'appliquent même à la caractérisation de concepts descriptifs. L'objectif de cet ouvrage est précisément de montrer l'élasticité du concept de complexité.
