Intertextualität und Rezeptionsästhetik lassen das traditionelle metaphorisch-religiöse Verständnis des Buches in einem neuen Licht erscheinen. Die altorientalische Liebeslyrik liefert weitere Argumente für diese offene Sicht. Ob das allegorische Verständnis des Hoheliedes als Ausdruck der Liebe zwischen Gott und Israel der ursprünglich intendierten Bedeutung entspricht, bleibt umstritten. Die Beiträge der Fachtagung der Arbeitsgemeinschaft der deutschsprachigen katholischen Alttestamentlerinnen und Alttestamentler im Jahre 2015 in Wien vermitteln einen lebendigen Eindruck von der neu aufgebrochenen Diskussion.
