Dass seine Rennkarriere eng verbunden war mit seiner Mitgliedschaft in der SS, ist zwar seit langem bekannt, wurde aber selten problematisiert. Rosemeyer wird bis heute weithin als unpolitischer Mensch dargestellt, der gezwungen gewesen sei, sich mit den Nationalsozialisten einzulassen, um überhaupt die Möglichkeit zu haben, als Rennfahrer auftreten zu können.

Das Buch untersucht die genaueren Umstände der Verstrickung Rosemeyers in den Nationalsozialismus und wendet sich gegen eine Fortsetzung eines unkritischen Rosemeyer-Kults. Anlass für diese Studie ist die geplante Eröffnung eines privaten Rosemeyer-Museums in Lingen.
