Der Formalismus des Wollens besitzt eine intentionale Struktur, da das menschliche Handeln nach Kant nicht dem Streben folgt, sondern einer Stellungnahme («Wie») zu den eigenen Strebungen (Absichten zur Handlung) entspringt. Dieses ungleichgültige «Wie» als Ja/Nein-Stellungnahme zu den eigenen Handlungsmöglichkeiten geschieht nach Kant nicht nach Belieben, da es zugleich um die eigene Selbst-Bezogenheit geht. Der Primat der praktischen Rationalität seit Kant fußt auf der Voraussetzung, dass dieser «Endzweck» als mich betreffender «Gegenstand» ausdrücklich geworden ist. Somit wird die zu machende Bewältigung des Lebens im Ganzen als rationales Ziel des eigenen Wollens anerkannt. Dies steht im direkten Gegensatz zur theoretisch objektivierenden Gewissheit.
