Die vorliegende Studie befaßt sich mit Goethes Werk und Wirken in Weimar und fragt nach der Relevanz, die der Freimaurerei für eine Deutung der darin enthaltenen Lebensspuren zukommt. Wie umfassend Goethe bestrebt war, seine Lebenswelt mit einem dichten System von Symbolen und Zeichen zu besetzen, wird zunächst an der Baugeschichte des Römischen Hauses gezeigt. Die Entschlüsselung der durch sie gegebenen Hinweise kommt ohne den Rekurs auf Goethes maurerische Interessen nicht aus. Dies zu erkennen, verlangte einen interdisziplinären Ansatz, mit dem die Studie bisher übliche Fragestellungen überschreitet. Ein aufschlußreiches Moment bildet in diesem Zusammenhang der Lebensbund Goethes mit Carl August von Sachsen-Weimar. Beide Freimaurer schöpften aus ihm eine Fülle von privaten Verweisungen und persönlichen Bezugnahmen, mit denen sie den obligaten Kanon der maurerischen Symbolsprache ergänzten. Auf den Niederschlag, den die im Römischen Haus und im lebensgeschichtlichen Umfeld Goethes manifest gewordene Sinngebung in Goethes Dichtung gefunden hat, geht die Studie nach einer Deutung des «Märchens» im letzten Teil erweiternd ein.
