Gleichzeitig zutiefst persönlich und verankert in der Weltgeschichte, zeichnen die Erzählungen Gotfryds ein Bild des Alltags der jüdischen Menschen in Polen während des zweiten Weltkriegs und der Nachwirkungen des Holocausts. Er beschreibt seine Arbeit als Fotograf im Ghetto, seine ersten Liebesbeziehungen und die schwierige Zeit in verschiedenen Konzentrationslagern. Dabei vereinen seine Erzählungen häufig die Beschreibung der Ereignisse während der Kriegszeit und ihre Auswirkungen auf das Leben Gotfryds etliche Jahre später. Durch diese Zeitsprünge gelingt es Gotfryd, den Holocaust mit der Gegenwart in Verbindung zu setzen und so einerseits die heutige Relevanz einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Krieg zu verdeutlichen und sich andererseits der Frage zu stellen, was es bedeutet, den Holocaust zu überleben.Das Buch enthält ein Nachwort seines Sohnes Howard Gotfryd.
