Siemens NX 12.0 for Designers, 11th Edition

About this book

Siemens NX 12.0 for Designers is a comprehensive textbook that introduces the users to feature based 3D parametric solid modeling using the NX 12.0 software. The textbook covers all major environments of NX with a thorough explanation of all tools, options, and their applications to create real-world products. In this textbook, about 39 mechanical engineering industry examples are used as tutorials and an additional 34 as exercises to ensure that the users can relate their knowledge and understand the design techniques used in the industry to design a product. After reading the textbook, the user will be able to create parts, assemblies, drawing views with bill of materials, and learn the editing techniques that are essential to make a successful design. Also, in this book, the author emphasizes on the solid modeling techniques that improve the productivity and efficiency of the user.Keeping in mind the requirements of the users, the textbook at first introduces sketching and part modeling in NX 12.0, and then gradually progresses to cover assembly, surfacing, and drafting. To make the users understand the concepts of Mold Design, a chapter on mold designing of the plastic components is available in the book. In addition, a new chapter on basic concepts of GD&T has also been added in this textbook. Both these chapters are available for free download. Written with the tutorial point of view and the learn-by-doing theme, the textbook caters to the needs of both novice and advanced users of NX 12.0 and is ideally suited for learning at your convenience and pace.

Pattern Feature Tool
Ribbon: Home > Feature > Pattern Feature
Menu: Insert > Associative Copy > Pattern Feature
The Pattern Feature tool is a very versatile tool in NX. This tool is used to create the linear and circular patterns of features. It is also used to create the polygon, spiral, along, general, reference, and helix patterns. The uses of this tool are discussed next.

Creating a Linear Pattern
Linear pattern of a feature is created by placing the instances of that feature along the two directions of the work coordinate system (WCS). To create a linear pattern, choose the Pattern Feature tool from the Feature group of the Home tab; the Pattern Feature dialog box will be displayed, refer to Figure 7-1. The Linear option is selected by default in the Layout drop-down list of the Pattern Definition rollout of the dialog box. Click in the Specify Vector area of the Direction 1 sub-rollout in the Pattern Definition rollout; a triad will be displayed in the graphics window and you will be prompted to select an object to define the first direction. Select an edge to define the first direction of the pattern creation. You can also use the triad to define the direction. Next, you need to define the number of instances and the spacing between them. There are four options to define the number of instances and spacing between them, which are listed in the Spacing drop-down list in the Direction 1 sub-rollout. These options are discussed next.

Count and Pitch
On selecting this option, the Count and Pitch Distance edit boxes will be displayed. You need to specify the number of instances in the Count ed...
