650 Idioms and Proverbial Phrases in Modern Standard Arabic is the ideal tool for learners of Arabic who wish to improve their knowledge and comprehension of Arabic language and culture and make their language more expressive and idiomatic.

Including over 650 idiomatic expressions found in contemporary Arabic, this book is divided into two parts. Part I lists the idioms alphabetically for ease of use, providing English equivalents and a range of illustrative example sentences to show how the idioms are used in different contexts. The idioms are chosen based on frequency of use in written Arabic as well as oral speech, in Arabic literature and mass media. Part II includes 30 practice exercises structured around original texts which include the idioms covered in Part I. ابْتَسَمَ لَهُ الحَظُّ

Fortune smiles on someone.

لقد ابتسمَ لها الحظّ بعد أن اشتهر طبخُها بفضلِ مقطع فيديو نشرتهُ على الإنترنت. /ابتسم له الحظّ بعدَ أن حصلَ على منحةٍ دراسيةٍ في كليّة الطّبّ المرموقة. /كان الحظّ يبتسمُ لها لأنّها كانت لطيفةً مع النّاس.

Good fortune smiled on her when her cooking became famous, thanks to a video she posted online./Good fortune smiled on him after he was granted a scholarship to the prestigious School of Medicine./Good fortune was smiling upon her because she was nice to people.

أَبَدُ الدَّهْرِ

Eternally; forever; for all eternity.

“ومن يَتهيّبُ صعودَ الجبالِ …يعِشْ أبدَ الدّهرِ بين الحُفر.” أبو القاسم الشّابي. /سيبقى القمر أبدَ الدّهرِ رمزًا لحُبّنا. /ستُوجّه روحُها الأمةَ أبدَ الدّهر باتجاه ازدهارها.

“He who does not dare to climb the mountains should live forever among the hollows.” Abu Al-Qassim Al-Shabbi./The moon will be an eternal symbol of love between me and you./Her spirit will eternally guide the nation towards its progress.

أَبْدى وُجْهَةَ نَظَر

To express or show a point of view, perspective, or opinion.

سعى المحامي إلى إبداءِ وجهة نظر المتهم أثناء غيابه. /لقد كانت حريصةً على إبداءِ وجهة نظرها في النّقاشات البرلمانيّة. /لم يُبدِ المسؤول وجهة نظرٍ إيجابيةٍ حول حكمِ سيادةِ القانون في البلد.

The attorney sought to show the defendant’s point of view in his absence./She was eager to express her opinion in the parliamentary discussions./The official did not express a positive perspective regarding the rule of law in the country.

أَبْصَرَ النّورَ

To see the light of day; to be born; to be launched; to start to exist.

ولولا دعم زوجتي وصبرها لما أبصرتْ هذه الرواية النور. /أبصرت اتفاقيةُ السّلام النورَ أخيرًا بعد أعوامٍ من التحضيرات. /بسبب سوء التّخطيط لم تُبصر أغلبُ مشاريع إعادةِ الإعمار النورَ قط.

This novel would never have seen the light of day without the support and patience of my wife./After years of preparations, the peace agreement finally saw the light of day./Due to poor planning, many reconstruction projects never saw the light of day.

أَبْلى بَلاءً حَسَنًا

To perform well in something challenging; to stand the test.

أبلى الحزبُ الحاكمُ بلاءً حسنًا في الانتخاباتِ الأخيرة، حيث فاز بأغلبية مقاعد البرلمان. /لقد أبلت البعثةُ الاستكشافيّة بلاءً حسنًا في مواجهةِ الشّتاء القطبيّ. /لم يُبلِ القطاعُ الخاص بلاءً حسنًا هذا العام.

The ruling party has performed well in the last elections, winning the majority of the seats in the parliament./This Expeditionary mission stood the test against the harsh arctic winters./The private sector has not done well this year.

اتّسَعَ صَدْرُهُ

To show breadth of mind; to be forbearing, understanding, patient, and open-minded; to be clement or lenient; to be tolerant or forgiving.

أظهر المديرُ سعةَ صدرٍ جديرةً بالثناء عندما واجههُ الموظّفُ بوابلٍ من الإهانات. /لقد اتّسع صدرُ الملك لكثيرٍ من الأسئلة المباشرة والصّريحة في المقابلة. /ستكونُ المنطقة المحيطة بقاعةِ الزّفاف مزدحمةً، لكنّنا نأملُ أن يتحلّى الجيران بسعةِ الصّدر في مثل هذه المناسبة السّعيدة.

The manager showed a commendable breadth of mind when the employee confronted him with a barrage of insults./The king tolerated many direct and explicit questions in the interview./The area around the wedding hall will be congested, but we hope that the neighbours will have patience on such a happy occasion.

أَثارَ حَفيظَةَ

To provoke the anger of someone; to irritate someone.

وأثار رفعُ أسعار المواد الغذائيّة حفيظةَ السّكانِ وسخطهم. /وقد أثار تصريحُ المتحدِّث الرّسميّ حفيظةَ المعارضةِ التي اعتبرتهُ إساءةً لها. /الممثلة السّويديّة تُطلقُ علامةً تجاريةً لملابس داخلية تُثير حفيظة المحافظين.

The rise in food prices has angered the population./The spokesperson’s statement angered the opposition, which it considered an insult./Swedish actress launches lingerie brand irritating conservatives.

أَثْبَتَ وُجودَهُ

To prove oneself; to make one’s presence felt; to excel.

لقد أثبتتِ المرأةُ وجودَها في المحافل الدّوليّة وفي صناعة القرار الدّوليّ. /بعد أن خلفَ أبيه فقد أثبتَ شيخُ القبيلة الشّاب وجوده في المعارك ضدّ القبائل الأخرى. /أثبت الحرسُ الوطنيّ وجوده في زمن الحرب والسّلام. /إنّ فنّ الغرافيتي هو وسيلة للشّباب كي يُثبتوا وجودَهم في المجتمع.

Women have proved themselves in international forums and decision-making./After succeeding his father, the young tribal sheikh proved himself in battles against the other tribes./The national guards excelled in times of war and peace./Graffiti is a way for young people to make their presence felt in society.

أَثَرًا بَعْدَ عَيْن

To leave something in ruins; to be wiped out; to be in total destruction.

أصبحت مدينةُ هيروشيما أثرًا بعد عين في غضونِ ثوانٍ بعد ضربها بالقنبلة النّوويّة. /وقد ذكر البيانُ أنّ الحرب الأهليّة قد تركتِ البُنية التّحتيّة في البلد أثرًا بعد عين. /ضرب الزّلزالُ المدينةَ وترك كلّ شيء أثرًا بعد عين.

The city of Hiroshima was wiped out in a matter of seconds after it was hit by the nuclear bomb./The statement said that the civil war had left the infrastructure totally destroyed./The earthquake rocked the city and left everything in ruins.

أَثْقَلَ كاهِلَ

To weigh heavily on someone; to burden heavily.

أثقلت مشكلةُ اللاجئين والنازحين كاهلَ الحكومة التي لا تعرف كيف تُدبّر المساعداتِ العاجلة. /ومع اقتراب شهر رمضان فقد أثقل انقطاع الرواتب كاهل العائلات الفقيرة. /أثقلتِ الديونُ كاهله فقرّر الانتحار.

The problem of refugees and displaced persons has weighed heavily on the government, which does not know how to manage emergency aid./The cut in salaries has weighed heavily on poverty-stricken families as Ramadan approaches./The debt had burdened him heavily, and he decided to commit suicide.

أَثْلَجَ صَدْرَ

To warm someone’s heart; to be tremendously heartened by something; to be gratifying.

لقد أثلجَ صدري ردُّ رئيسة الوزراء واستعدادها لمساعدتنا. /لقد أثلج صدورنا التجاوب الذي لقيناه وإقبال الناس علينا. /إنّ ما يُثلج صدورنا هو قدرتنا على سداد الكثير من ديوننا لهذا العام.

I am heartened by the prime minister’s response and her willingness to help us./We were heartened by the response we received from people./It is gratifying for us to be able to pay off so much of the debts for this year.

اجْتَمَعَتْ كَلِمَةُ

To join forces; to unite; to come together; to have consensus upon to do something common.

لقد اجتمعت كلمةُ الإعلام ضدّ هذا السّياسيّ الشّعبويّ. /يجبُ أن تجتمع كلمتنا على مواجهةِ الإرهاب وجذوره. /يُهمّني أن تجتمع كلمتهم تحت القيادة كي يَحموا أنفسهم ضدّ التهديداتِ الخارجيّة.

The media have come together against this populist politician./We should join our forces to battle terrorism and its origins./It is important for me that they should unite under the leadership to protect themselves against external threats.

أَجْحَفَ بِحَقِّهِ/حَقَّهُ

To be biased against someone; to be unfair or unjust to someone; to deny the right of someone.

وقد ذهب الخبيرُ إلى القول بأنّ التّقرير قد أجحفَ بحقِّ البلد وكانت نتائجه غير جديرةٍ بالثّقة. /إنّ القوانين الحاليّة تُمثّل إجحافًا بحقوقِ المرأة، ومن الواضح أنّه ينبغي أن تَخضعَ للمراجعة. /لقد أجحفوا بحقِّ أنفسهم عندما تبنّوا أهدافًا غير واقعيّة لايستطيعون تحقيقها.

The expert argued that the report was biased against the country and its findings lacked trustworthiness./The current laws deny the rights of women; it is obviously fair that they should be revised./They became unfair toward themselves when they set unrealistic goals they could not achieve.

أَحاطَهُ عِلْمًا بـــِ

To inform someone; to bring to someone’s knowledge; to brief someone.

لقد أُحيطَ الرئيسُ علمًا بعملية الإنقاذ في بحر الشّمال. /إنّ كبير أمناء المكتبة لم يُحطني علمًا بهذه المخطوطاتِ القديمة. /وسيُحيطك الخبراء علمًا ببعض القرارات التي تمّ اتّخاذها.

The president was informed about the rescue operation in the North Sea./No old manuscripts have been brought to my knowledge by the head librarian./The experts will brief you on some decisions that have been made.

أَحْدَقَتْ بِهِ المَخاطِرُ

To be surrounded by danger.

حين تُحدِقُ بالإنسان المخاطرُ فإنّه يبدأ بالتفكير في التّكيّف معها. /لقد أحدقتْ بها المخاطر وتُحاولُ حمايةَ أطفالِها بأيِّ ثمن. /وإن كانوا غير مستهدَفين فإنّهم يعرفون في قرارةِ أنفسهم أنّ الأخطار مُحدِقة بهم الآن بسبب معتقداتهم الدّينيّة.

When humans are surrounded by danger, they begin to think of adaptation./She is surrounded by danger, and she is trying to protect her children at all costs./Even if they are not targeted, they know deep down that they are now surrounded by danger because of their religious beliefs.

أَحْكَمَ السَّيْطَرَةَ/القَبْضَةَ على

To tighten the control or the grip over something; to take full control over; to take over.
