El libro se propone estudiar el entramado de diálogos entre la literatura y la praxis crítica reponiendo el peso que esta última, junto a otros factores, ejerce en la conformación del estado del campo literario y en la determinación de su canon. Particularmente, la problemática se centra en la dinámica del pensamiento y la reflexión latinoamericanista de los años ochenta y noventa, mientras que propone ciertos tópicos y cuestionamientos propios de la coyuntura: cosmopolitismo, identidad, autonomía, imperialismo, exotismo, fronteras. Frente a estas disposiciones contextuales, el trabajo busca generar una lectura amalgamada que escape de ciertos reduccionismos, como aquellos que suelen endosar al neoliberalismo al conjunto de las producciones estéticas, pues los noventa no han sido clásicos ni en sus programas, ni en sus polémicas, ni en sus búsquedas estéticas. Y tal vez por el efecto de contraste con nuestra contemporaneidad, ciertas preguntas resurgen: ¿Fue esta novedad una mera construcción de mercado? ¿Una demanda teórica, crítica, académica? ¿Fueron, sus expresiones más conocidas, el Crack, McOndo, Shangai, el último coletazo de un tiempo cansado? ¿Qué nos ha quedado de él?
