1st Truth:
Eternity
image
There are inconceivable things to us, mere mortals. Like the Trinity, for example, eternity is also an unintelligible concept for mankind. Your imagination will always play a trick on you when it comes to eternity, as the mind is limited to conceive a starting and an ending point for any existing thing.
We find at the beginning of John’s book some impressive reports about Jesus.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
John 1:1-3
John’s book is completely dedicated to explain the works and greatness of Christ. Right at the beginning we find these beautiful words that show Jesus' eternity and power over creation.
But, so far, we have learned 3 valuable things about the Prince of Peace: He was at the beginning of the creation of the universe with God the Father, He is one with God the Father together with the Holy Spirit (Trinity) and everything was created by Him.
In another biblical passage we will see that not only was everything done by Him, but also for Him.
For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen.
Romans 11:36
Jesus is powerful over his creation! He did it Himself, He controls it Himself, He is the center of all things. Seeing it this way it is not difficult to accept the idea of eternity in relation to His origin. One of Christ's names is Father of Eternity, in other words, even time is one of His creations (as incomprehensible as all of this seems for us).
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6
The prophet Isaiah had revealed to the populiation of Israel some names of the Savior that those people had been waiting for. In the biblical version New International Version, we find the term “Eternal Father” instead of “Father of Eternity”. In any case, we see Christ being revealed as part of the Holy Trinity and eternal, therefore, without a beginning and without an end.
The existential eternity of Jesus is a logical question if we recognize God the Father as eternal, because Jesus is God the Father and God the Father is Jesus, even though they are different parts of the same God. I refuse to extend any analysis of the Trinity since it would be impossible to unravel it completely.
As the prophet Jeremiah said:
But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath.
Jeremiah 10:10
God is the Eternal King. When we refer to God, we are also referring to Jesus and the Holy Spirit. They are one, even if they are three. Both the concept of Trinity and eternity are a real mystery to the human mind, but the fact is that divine truths do not depend on human understanding to be validated. These facts are just what they are.
When we are talking about God, we need to recognize the intellectual misery distorted by sin that erodes the original characteristics of creation over the centuries. This is the importance of faith in what I do not see, but I believe. Regardless of what science says, the first unquestionable truth about Jesus is: He is eternal in all His essence.
John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.”
John 1:15
2nd Truth:
Humanity
image
Here is an issue that has divided humanity so much in the past millennia. After all, was Jesus fully man or fully God? This may seem to be a simple question, but the conceptions arising from this question divide theologians and, consequently, the masses.
If I affirm that Jesus was fully man while he lived in this world, then I cannot consider Him as a sufficient sacrifice for all mankind and, moreover, I cancel some Old Testament prophecies about Him. On the other hand, if I deny the humanity of Christ and affirm that His life in this world was totally in spirit, I deny His sufferings resulting from the miserable human limitations.
And what does the Scripture say about that? We will begin this study with Luke’s book, chapter 1.
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God.
Luke 1:26-35
There are no doubts about the fact that Jesus was born as a human being, respecting all natural processes of birth (except the act of sexual intercourse between the progenitors, since Christ could not be the result of a carnal relationship, but of a divine miracle).
Jesus developed normally as a man, despite the few events narrated about His childhood. One of the few events about the childhood of Jesus can be found in the second chapter of Luke’s book (any other manuscripts outside the Bible that promise to explain facts about the childhood of Christ must be disregarded because they do not fit in with the other biblical books, in addition to not being considered by the early Church as inspired by the Holy Spirit of God¹).
Another proof that cooperates with the idea that Jesus, besides being totally God, was also totally man, is the prophecy about Christ found already in the 3rd chapter of Genesis.
So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Genesis 3:14,15 (emphasis added)
This is the passage from which God decrees the punishment of the Serpent after inducing Eve into sin. Realize that the Lord refers to the descendant of Eve using direct article, that is, someone specific would hurt Satan’s head. We know that from Eve all the human inhabitants of the planet arose, therefore, this prophecy spoke about a single person: Jesus of Nazareth.
We have, then, God revealing Jesus as a descendant of a human creature and not as a spirit coming directly from heaven. We can now conclude this truth: Jesus was fully man. However, we cannot stop here.
The fact that Jesus was incarnated, in other words, became flesh as one of us, mere mortals, did not nullify Jesus' divinity. Let us first remember that it was the Holy Spirit who generated Jesus in Mary. And she, for her part, was a virgin, so we cannot claim that the human being has any direct participation in the birth of the Savior.
In addition to the prophecies about Christ in the Old Testament (which are many), we have signs that Jesus was still the only-begotten son of God e...
