All'epoca l'Unione Sovietica sta vivendo il «disgelo» voluto da Chruš?ëv, durante il quale si susseguono alcuni timidi segnali di apertura. Proprio sfruttando questi spiragli di libertà, Tarkovskij racconta la vicenda del monaco pittore vissuto in tempi calamitosi (la Russia del XIV e XV secolo), facendone una metafora del potere salvifico dell'arte e dello spirito dell'uomo, e un atto d'accusa verso i totalitarismi che non ha perso nulla della sua forza originaria.
