I rapporti tra il cinema e la storia dell'arte sono stati variamente studiati. Meno indagata, forse, è stata la valutazione del cinema quale momento specifico all'interno della storia dell'arte. Ovvero, nell'istituzione che si chiama «storia dell'arte», quale posizione occupa davvero il cinema? Per tentare di elaborare una risposta, occorre dichiarare il modello selezionato di storia dell'arte, quindi puntualizzare i luoghi di transito di tutto il processo. Noi abbiamo scelto il modello di storia dell'arte di Giulio Carlo Argan, e dunque il contesto storico-culturale dell'Italia degli anni '30, quello della costruzione di Cinecittà, fino agli anni '60, in cui il cinema inizia a perdere il suo primato di linguaggio audiovisivo dominante. Ma sono anche l'idea di cinema di André Bazin e il sistema hollywoodiano, con Martin Scorsese, a fornire un contributo importante per mettere a fuoco il ruolo che il cinema può svolgere nell'ambito dell'evoluzione storico-artistica contemporanea. Questione tutt'altro che risolta e che contiene al proprio interno non solo valutazioni estetiche, ma anche un problema cruciale di civiltà.
