Coaching a team at this level also means facing daily difficulties, confronting others, produce ideas, take decisions on many fronts, dictate rules and ensure that those rules are followed. Players themselves, during the season, will acknowledge that compliance with the rules and discipline represent the basic requirements for working well and achieving results. I believe, therefore, that the best way to enforce the concept of democracy in a group is to impose the respect of roles and hierarchy.

1. Introduction

This work, the result of my coaching experience gained over many years in the northern Sardinia and the province of Nuoro’s dusty pitches, is not meant to convince anyone that I have been the first coach to use the 4-5-1- formation at amateur level.

However, I think that, in those brilliant and rewarding years for me, for Padria football club and for players I owe great respect and gratitude to– and I do not forget all the players I coached in the following experience at Bosa and Pozzomaggiore – the application of that tactical system was rather unintentional and indeed the consequence of a continuous adjustment dictated by all the difficulties you face on daily basis at amateur level.

The choice of 4- 5- 1 formation, an apparently defensive strategy, used to arise from the necessity to fill the technical gap, partly proved unfounded, with other teams, some of them – Macomer, Nuorese and Portotorres being the most important ones – determined, by virtue of their history and blazon, to gain an immediate promotion to the upper division.

What I strongly believed and wanted to pass on my players was that, by staying behind the defensive line and managing to fill all the gaps, you could then hit the opponent by counter attacking in the uncovered spaces. This strategy was aimed to create a great complicity between me and the players. We all would end up accepting and strengthening a cautious and defensive mentality which was aimed to achieving the maximum result in relation to psychological, physical, technical-tactical situations we managed to create during the match.
