ll conte di Montecristo è uno dei più celebri romanzi di Alexandre Dumas e - come molti suoi testi - si situa nell'alveo del feuilleton, o romanzo d'appendice: un'avventurosa narrazione di fatti, ricca di colpi di scena e intrighi, che veniva redatta per comparire a puntate nelle ultime pagine dei quotidiani. Pubblicato dunque originariamente nel Journal des débats tra il 1844 ed il 1846, Il conte di Montecristo narra le peripezie del marinaio Edmond Dantès, sedicente Conte di Montecristo, tra il porto di Marsiglia, alcune isole del Mediterraneo, e Parigi. La trama si colloca storicamente tra il periodo di prigionia all'isola d'Elba di Napoleone Bonaparte e il governo di Luigi Filippo d'Orléans, ultimo re di Francia prima dell'impero di Napoleone III ed è ricca di rimandi storici. In questo immortale capolavoro Dumas riesce a trattare con una maestria ineguagliabile temi di portata universale quali la giustizia, il tradimento, la vendetta, il perdono e la redenzione. Alexandre Dumas padre (1802-1870) è stato un celeberrimo scrittore e drammaturgo francese, maestro del romanzo storico e del teatro. Oltre a Il Conte di Montecristo, tra i suoi capolavori intramontabili possiamo citare I Tre Moschettieri, La Regina Margot e Vent'Anni Dopo.
