Il titolo è riferito alla seconda spedizione della nave HMS Beagle, che salpò da Plymouth Sound, il 27 Dicembre 1831 sotto il comando del capitano Robert Fitzroy. Originariamente la durata della spedizione fu prevista per due anni ma in realtà ne durò quasi cinque, infatti la nave Beagle non ritornò fino al 2 ottobre 1836. Darwin trascorse la maggior parte del suo tempo ad esplorare il terreno (tre anni e tre mesi a terra; 18 mesi in mare). Il libro, noto anche come "Darwin's Journal of Researches" (Le ricerche ufficiali di Darwin), è un vivido ricordo di un emozionante viaggio, nonchÊ una dettagliata rivista scientifica che riguarda biologia, geologia, antropologia che dimostra di Darwin un forte spirito di osservazione, scritto in un momento in cui gli europei occidentali esploravano il mondo intero.
