Il canale di Suez  è un alveo artificiale navigabile situato in Egitto, a ovest della penisola del Sinai, tra Porto Said sul mar Mediterraneo e Suez sul Mar Rosso. Taglia l'omonimo istmo di Suez, permettendo la navigazione diretta dal Mediterraneo all'Oceano Indiano, senza la necessità di circumnavigare l'Africa sull'Oceano Atlantico lungo la rotta del capo di Buona Speranza.
Completato nel 1867 e inaugurato il 17 novembre 1869, il canale venne realizzato dal francese Ferdinand de Lesseps su progetto dell'ingegnere italiano Luigi Negrelli e consiste di due tratte, a nord e a sud dei Laghi amari. I lavori durarono 10 anni e videro la cooperazione tra molte nazioni europee, tra le quali la Francia diede il contributo maggiore. Il canale di Suez è una Importantissima via d'acqua che attraversa l'istmo omonimo, separando l'Africa dall'Asia e congiungendo il mar Rosso col Mediterraneo. Il canale è lungo 167 km, di cui 11 costituiti dai canali dragati d'approccio, largo 70-125 m alla superficie e 45-100 sul fondo, profondo 11-12 m. Più precisamente il canale va dal golfo di Suez., a sud, a Porto Said, sul Mediterraneo, e divide l'Egitto dalla penisola del Sinai.
