B’REISHEET (in the beginning), God creates perfection! But man disobeys, paradise crashes, and the world fragments into nations. Thus begins a long journey to return to God’s Presence and walk in covenant with Him.
v’Eleh SH’MOT (and these are names) of seventy sons of Ya’akov. Reunited as a family in Egypt, they grow in numbers, then suffer slavery until God redeems them. Yisra’el becomes a kingdom of priests—called to build God’s dwelling, unite as a nation, and bring all nations to covenant with the God of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya’akov!
VAYIKRA ADONAI (and the LORD called) to Moshe, and later the nation, to draw near to Him. Under God’s protective covering, Yisra’el abides as a holy nation in the manifest Presence of a holy God. The nation elevates kohanim to abide in close proximity to God and to devote exceptional attention to matters of ritual purity, a necessary state for abiding in the presence of a holy God.

A priestly nation arises B’MIDBAR (in the wilderness of) Sinai, and all stand up to be counted for the LORD! God says to number the army of the LORD of Hosts. Then He surrounds His dwelling with an inner circle of priests and their assistants, to safeguard it from encroachment by those in a state of ritual impurity. The rest of the house of Yisra’el encircles the Levites, camping under the banners of their respective tribes.
