Analyzing Efficiency & Managerial Performance

Using Sensitivity Scores of DEA Models

About this book

This study was initially the author's Ph.D dissertation written at the University of Texas at Austin in 1995 entitled "A New Approach to Sensitivity Analysis of the DEA Models and their Applications to Ranking and Productivity Growth." An updated preface and a general index were added for this book which was originally published in 1996. The primary objective of this study is to demonstrate a new method available to management scientists for evaluating the organizational efficiency performance and analyzing how stable the evaluations are to the sample data collections.

INTRODUCTION

Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a methodology for analyzing the relative efficiency and managerial performance of productive (or decision making) units(DMUs) which have the same multiple inputs and outputs. The first publication of Data Envelopment Analysis appeared in 1978 by Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes. According to Charnes and Cooper (1985), this work began three years earlier in collaboration with E. Rhodes to develop more adequate methods for evaluating some of the government supported programs for disadvantaged children attending public schools. The original DEA model is called CCR ratio model and is based on a concept of efficiency that is widely used in engineering and in the natural sciences. Engineering efficiency is defined as the ratio of the amount of work performed by a machine to the amount of energy consume...
