Es una novela inspirada por las experiencias de Mercedes Valdivieso en una estadía en China en 1960. Época en la cual la revolución liderada por Mao Tse-Tung constituía un hecho admirable para los sectores de izquierda, tanto en Europa como en América Latina. Uno de los proyectos posrevolucionarios fue invitar a intelectuales y artistas de todo el mundo a Pekín con el objetivo de que permanecieran allí varios meses y, a su regreso, difundieran en sus respectivos países los positivos cambios logrados por la revolución para, de este modo, obtener una visibilidad internacional. Clara, en un gesto libertario, rehúsa participar en los paseos turísticos organizados por los funcionarios del Gobierno chino para sus visitantes extranjeros y prefiere viajar sola en el transporte público y conocer la China milenaria y popular.
