THE IMPORTANCE OF UX RESEARCH IN

THE DESIGN PROCESS

What is UX research, and why do we need

it in the design process?
In my opinion, most designers have a strong sense of
how they want their product to function and what features
they want. But designing without research is like building a
house without an architect's blueprints! The UX designer
examines the behavior and needs of users to create a
coherent design that encompasses all sides of the process.
So there is no getting away from talking to, researching, and
looking into who your users are and what their needs are.
In recent years, the process of doing proper UX research
has been put on the agenda for companies that want to
create a product that resonates with their customers and
users. Through this research, UX designers should create a
design that reflects how people want to use the product, not
only what they think is the best way to use it.
This chapter examines some examples of why UX
research is so essential for developing successful products
and provides you with some general guidelines on how to
104
Winning The Game
carry out appropriate UX research. Much has been written
about user experience research. However, many companies
still do not know precisely what this means or why we need
it to make our designs more effective and increase customer
satisfaction rates.

The importance of user testing

Designers and marketers are constantly looking for ways
to improve their work. It is often difficult to identify the
flaws in your design, and it can be hard to know where you
could have improved things. The best way to find out is to
test your plans and ideas with real people, so user tests
should be an essential part of any designer's process. 94
Before you spend hours on a new project, you have
someone test different parts of it as you develop it.
Some of the things to test:
Navigating through the site.
Sign up for an account and log in.
Testing of various features of the site/app.
Some of the best ways to perform user tests are:
Invite people to test your website or app in
exchange for feedback.
Create relevant surveys for what you are testing,
and try relevant users, preferably based on a person.
Perform A/B tests of the features you want to
test. 95
105
Winning The Game
Friends, family members, colleagues, or others
who could be potential users of the site/app can try
to navigate through it while watching their
experiences.
User tests can help designers solve problems with UX
design by improving customer satisfaction rates and finding
ways to increase conversion rates. It helps them make
informed decisions about how they want to enhance
techniques before they spend hours working on something
that might not work as well as they expected. When done
correctly, user tests give valuable insights into what
customers are looking for, so the designer can quickly iterate
and get traction. 96
