Dieser Band ist im DFG-Forschungsprojekt 'Epische Modellierung ideologischer Konflikte in der Frühen Neuzeit' entstanden. Die in diesem Band eingenommene Perspektive gründet sich auf drei Beobachtungen: Erstens ist für epische Texte die literarische Gestaltung von militärischen, politischen, territorialen und sozialen Konflikten grundlegend. Zweitens bauen Epen solche Konflikte stets in den Dimensionen von Raum und Zeit auf, weswegen für epische Konfliktmodellierung Fragen der literarischen Chronotopik eine fundamentale Rolle spielen. Drittens sind die vom Epos somit erzeugten Raum-Zeit-Komplexe unweigerlich mit ideologischer Wertsetzung behaftet: Die Raum-Zeit-Struktur des epischen Konflikts erzeugt semiosphärische Gebilde, wodurch in der epischen Handlungswelt konträre Ideologien gegeneinander in Stellung gebracht werden. Unter diesen Voraussetzungen anaylsiert der Band das chronotopische und ideologisch-semiosphärische Profil von Vergils 'Aeneis', Lucans 'Pharsalia', Petrarcas 'Africa', Vidas 'Christias', Sannazaros 'De partu Virginis' und Trissinos 'Italia liberata dai Goti'.
