Cette pièce furieusement baroque tient son originalité de deux phénomènes: l'inversion des rôles de sexe, aboutissant à la mise aux enchères d'un prétendu comte et à son enlèvement fictif par une marquise inexistante, d'une part; ainsi que d'autre part, le fait d'avoir été la première comédie écrite et publiée par une femme, Mme Ulrich (quoique sous le nom de son amant, l'acteur Florent Dancourt), en 1691. Représentée à la Comédie Française dès 1690, avec succès, elle fut reprise l'année suivante et jouée à Versailles, devant la Cour.Dans le registre des pièces de Molière (Dancourt en était un acteur), on y dénote une sensibilité plus féminine. Une satire des moeurs et de l'hypocrisie de l'époque, mais ne touchant aucune institution, qu'elle fût religieuse ou nobiliaire.
