Fra tutti i cosiddetti Rentier State su base petrolifera, l'Arabia Saudita è quello che sembra aver meglio interpretato l'immaginario delle società occidentali in termini di benessere, successo, potere e denaro. Come ci riesce? Il wahhabismo, proprio per le sue caratteristiche ultraconservatrici e formaliste nell'applicazione del dettato coranico, costituisce in Arabia Saudita la base piùadatta al dispiegarsi di un potere politico e di una dinamica sociale perfettamente conformi alle caratteristiche espansive del capitalismo, in particolare alla sua dimensione cultuale, cioè al dispiegarsi sre- golato di un desiderio consumistico che non conosce soddisfacimento, che non ha come fine l'affermazione o la redenzione, ma solo la propria incessante perpetuazione, mai soddisfatta.
