Il 10 ottobre 2017 l'attrice Asia Argento rivela di essere stata stuprata nel 1997 da Harvey Weinstein, produttore di Hollywood, già accusato da più donne di molestie seriali. Il 12 ottobre viene lanciato l'hashtag #quellavoltache, ripreso dai due siti di informazione Gaypost.it e Pasionaria.it, che si mettono a disposizione per raccogliere le testimonianze delle donne italiane che hanno subito molestie. #quellavoltache rimane attivo per due settimane. Successivamente, il 15 ottobre, parte dagli Stati Uniti la denuncia sotto il già collaudato hashtag #metoo, creato nel 2007 dall'attivista Tarana Burke. Una rilevazione fatta a una settimana dall'avvio dell'hashtag italiano segnala più di 20 mila occorrenze, ma il dato è incompleto; le testimonianze sono molte di più: #quellavoltache è dilagato ovunque. L'età prevalente in cui sono avvenuti gli episodi testimoniati risulta molto bassa ma i racconti sono arrivati per lo più da donne adulte che hanno riferito episodi di molestia avvenuti nel lontano passato. Le minorenni di oggi sono totalmente escluse da questa rilevazione. Fra le migliaia di testimonianze ricevute ne sono state selezionate oltre 700; di queste, su circa 250 hanno ottenuto l'autorizzazione alla pubblicazione.
