L'individuo è un atomo, una monade senza fi nestre, un confi ne con tanto di muri e fi lo spinato; la singolarità è potenza – ovvero desiderio di vita – e intreccio – ovvero combinazione dei desideri secondo i corpi, le tracce o immagini che di questi abbiamo, le idee. L'individuo è un'emergenza, un'isola, lava rappresa; la singolarità è un modo di essere della materia-energia dalla quale la natura tutta costantemente sorge. Gli individui sono sempre giustapposti e in competizione, le singolarità sono sempre in composizione o, al contrario, compresse, avvelenate, infi ne decomposte: i primi pretendono contratti e denaro, sovrani e leggi; le seconde, nel confl itto, mostrano con esempi, usano regole, inventano istituzioni. Il libro, attraverso un confronto serrato con i classici del pensiero politico e della metafi sica, ma anche con la psicoanalisi, la fi losofi a del linguaggio e le scienze sociali, ricostruisce l'alternativa che segna la modernità capitalistica e la lunga crisi del nostro tempo, avanzando alcune proposte per prendere congedo da entrambe.
