In esso vengono messe a confronto la cultura occidentale e quella orientale, il cristianesimo e l'induismo, in un momento cruciale della loro storia, quando entrambe entrano in una crisi che, come scrive Panikkar, «potrebbe anche apparire senza via d'uscita», nell'ipotesi che ciascuna possa trovare nell'altra gli elementi vitali attraverso cui rinnovarsi. In modo emblematico le figure scelte da Panikkar come simboli delle due culture, Kierkegaard e Sànkara, non soltanto incarnano il prototipo delle mentalità e delle psicologie occidentali e orientali - ognuna con le sue inclinazioni, la sua ricchezza e i suoi limiti -, ma entrambe condividono il fatto di vivere in tempi di decadenza religiosa e, proprio per questo, di anelare alla verità assoluta.
