Teodolinda, regina dei Longobardi, era gloriosissima già per i suoi contemporanei. Le pagine che le dedica Paolo Diacono la circondano di un fascino sconosciuto alle altre regine di quel popolo. A Monza, città cui è particolarmente legata la sua memoria, poco mancò, in passato, che venisse considerata una santa. D'altro canto, Teodolinda non fu solo «la regina che convertì i Longobardi al cattolicesimo» con la collaborazione di papa Gregorio Magno. Teodolinda era sì cattolica, ma scismatica, tranne, forse, verso la fine della sua vita; per questo motivo, la sua collaborazione con il Papa si svolse sostanzialmente sul piano politico. Il carteggio tra lei e il Pontefice, riportato in appendice, rivela un rapporto estremamente complesso, legato anche al ruolo della donna nell'antica cultura germanica. Ma Teodolinda non fu solo questo. Svolse un ruolo politico attivo, prima a fianco del marito Agilulfo, poi da sola quando, in qualità di reggente, governò il Regno longobardo per alcuni anni, dialogando con le maggiori personalità del suo tempo e godendo di prestigio internazionale.
