Da qualche decennio l'arte romanica è alla moda. Ma la basilica di Ripoll o il Fondaco dei Turchi a Venezia sono veramente edifici romanici? Le statue lignee raffiguranti la Madonna e Cristo con il volto nero erano proprio cosÏ anticamente? In questo libro si mette in discussione il concetto stesso di romanico e di arte romanica, se ne indagano le origini, e soprattutto si contestualizza la sua genesi storiografica nel particolare contesto culturale della prima metà dell'Ottocento, quando in tutta Europa per la prima volta si scoprÏ, come d'improvviso, la produzione artistica anteriore all'avvento di quella maniera di costruire che Vasari definÏ come tedesca o portata dai Goti. Il libro analizza l'elaborazione storiografica e nazionalistica dell'idea di romanico, decostruendone invenzioni ed errori, ponendo l'accento su alcune questioni controverse come la popolarità degli artisti, il ruolo della donna nell'universo artistico misogino dell'epoca o la ricca policromia degli edifici. Ma nello stesso tempo svela la vera personalità del Medioevo romanico, dalla Francia all'Italia, dall'Inghilterra alla Catalogna, mettendo a confronto idee e modelli architettonici e figurativi, in un dialogo che probabilmente in quei secoli fu molto piÚ vivace e vitale di quanto oggi pensiamo.
