Hanna Lévy-Hass scrisse il suo diario a Bergen-Belsen quando ancora sperava in un mondo migliore. «Si scrivono così tanti libri», diceva spesso, «se non si ha nulla di veramente eccezionale da dire, non ha senso scrivere». Il suo scrivere aveva un senso - documentare e ricordare avevano un ruolo nella costruzione di un mondo «che sarà bello». Il suo successivo silenzio fu una costante ammissione che il mondo del dopoguerra non era affatto nuovo. Hanna, di famiglia ebrea sefardita, nata e cresciuta a Sarajevo nella ex Jugoslavia (oggi Bosnia-Erzegovina), fu internata nel campo di Bergen-Belsen nel 1944 e, per una serie di coincidenze, fu tra le poche persone a sopravvivere.
