Sono passati duemila anni da quando Seneca scriveva un libro dal titolo De brevitate vitae (La brevità della vita) rivolto criticamente a coloro che consideravano la vita troppo breve; egli saggiamente argomentava che la vita non si misura dal numero degli anni, ma da come viene vissuta. Se questo giudizio rimane sempre valido, esso però oggi si trova a confrontarsi con una realtà che è all'opposto: la vita degli anziani sta diventando lunga, secondo alcuni troppo lunga. Il problema degli anziani non può essere visto come qualcosa che riguarda solo loro; l'intera società è messa in gioco per trovare un nuovo equilibrio sociale soddisfacente, sia nei rapporti che nella distribuzione di attività, mezzi, opportunità. I ruoli dovranno essere più fluidi; i confini tra lavoro e pensioni, tra lavoro e attività, tra generazioni, tenderanno a saltare.
È un'opera imponente, rielaborativa e ricostruttiva, quella che ci aspetta e che ha come condizione prima una cultura aperta e disponibile, una forma di riconversione culturale. Un grande compito spetta in proposito al sindacato, perché in Italia è il sindacato a organizzare cinque milioni di pensionati: tuttavia molte esigenze di oggi non riguardano specificatamente il pensionato, ma più ampiamente l'anziano. Se vorrà mantenere il proprio ascendente, il sindacato dovrà dunque rispondere a queste nuove esigenze e farsi carico di più ampie prospettive.
