Lord, we pray for those who work for agencies of relief, especially [name],

that they may have wisdom and courage in the decisions they must make.

The Lord hears our prayer.

Thanks be to God.

Lord, we pray for those who cry for justice for the poor,

for those who speak out for those whose voices are not heard

and for those who work unselfishly for those who cannot work for themselves.

Please give them strength in their endeavours.

The Lord hears our prayer.

Thanks be to God.

Lord, we pray for those who do not want our pity—

they simply want a new chance;

for those who do not want our help—they simply want fairness;

for those who need aid, but would rather

be allowed the opportunity to live and to grow for themselves.

Please open up new opportunities for them.

The Lord hears our prayer.

Thanks be to God.

Lord, we pray for the church, your people throughout the world.

We ask for the courage to speak for those deprived of a voice,

the willingness to share the pain of those whose hands are empty

and the power to stand up for the powerless, the lost and those with no hope—

and to go on standing, no matter the cost.

The Lord hears our prayer.

In the name of Christ, who like his Father is always on the side of the poor. Amen.

and whose bodies and minds and lives were damaged
