Este libro es un estudio de la figura de Rafael Calvo Serer y su influencia en la revista Arbor, sobre todo en un grupo de personas que colaboraron de manera estrecha en esa revista y en otras empresas culturales durante el franquismo. En primer lugar, trata de exponer qué escribían, qué pensaban, qué mentalidad tenían los componentes de este equipo de acción cultural. A continuación, se muestra cómo el grupo Arbor creció en número y presencia en la vida cultural española a finales de los años cuarenta. Por último, se estudia la entrada de Rafael Calvo en el consejo privado de Don Juan de Borbón en 1952, la configuración de un «sistema de hombres con ideas», que ganaba oposiciones y premios, las crisis en la dirección de la revista Arbor antes y después de la publicación de un artículo de Calvo en Écrits de Paris contrario a la política cultural de Ruiz-Giménez.
