La storia della Turchia moderna inizia dopo la prima guerra mondiale, con Mustafa Kemal e il processo di trasformazione in un Paese occidentale. Per tutto il Novecento la Turchia è stata un Paese laico; la situazione è però completamente cambiata da quando è salito al potere Erdogan, deciso ad assumere la fede come elemento di guida e orientamento della vita politica e sociale della Turchia.
