Prima guerra mondiale. Il comando italiano vuole strappare a tutti i costi il monte Cauriòl alle truppe austro-ungariche. Un primo tentativo di conquista, attraverso una scalata, finisce in un disastro. Solo il 27 agosto 1916 gli Alpini, grazie alla copertura dell’artiglieria e dopo tre tentativi respinti, riescono a prendere la vetta, catturando i pochi nemici sopravvissuti. La conquista del Cauriòl rappresenta per l’Italia l’episodio più fulgido della guerra nella catena del Lagorai; si stima che in quelle battaglie siano morti circa diecimila soldati italiani e un numero simile di austro-ungarici. L’Italia manterrà il controllo del monte Cauriòl fino alla disfatta di Caporetto.
Attraverso un romanzo storico rigoroso e ineccepibile, viene narrata una vicenda chiave del primo conflitto mondiale che dal 1916, attraverso i protagonisti dei due eserciti opposti, si conclude solo ai nostri giorni.
