Sono passati trent'anni da quando l'Italia ha ratificato la Convenzione delle Nazioni Unite contro la tortura.
Durante questi tre decenni la tortura è stata negata, i fatti e le responsabilità occultati, la nozione stessa di tortura rimossa. L'impunità per fatti di tortura è dovuta in larga parte agli effetti della mancata introduzione del reato specifico nel nostro codice penale.
Ora quel reato c'è, ma la sua definizione è formulata in termini restrittivi e oscuri, al punto da suscitare dubbi sulla sua effettiva idoneità a comprendere il fenomeno della tortura nella sua dimensione attuale.
Questo libro racconta vicende di tortura che, in un modo o nell'altro, negli ultimi tre decenni hanno coinvolto l'Italia e le sue istituzioni politiche e giudiziarie: da quella del "tipografo delle Br", condannato per calunnia per avere denunciato le torture subìte, a quella del cappellano militare che non sarà estradato in Argentina; dai fatti della Somalia a quelli di Genova; dalla extraordinary rendition di Abu Omar in Egitto ai respingimenti verso la Libia; fino alla storia della ricerca di verità e giustizia per Giulio Regeni.
