Fine anni Sessanta: Pee Wee e Joe sono due teenagers neri di Harlem destinati a entrare nella storia del basket di strada. Il primo, spigliato, disinvolto, è il più piccolo di una famiglia numerosa; il secondo è orfano e vive con la nonna. Entrambi sopportano poco la realtà disastrosa del loro quartiere e si affidano al crimine per fare soldi. Pee Wee spaccia droga fin da piccolo e anche Joe finisce col cedere al fascino della ricchezza facile. Li unisce il basket e il Rucker Park, il playground più famoso del mondo. I due crescono con molti soldi e secondo le regole della strada, ma senza il lusso di poter programmare il futuro. L'innato talento nel basket propone loro continue occasioni – il college, l'Nba – per uscire da quel mondo, ma nessuno dei due le afferra mai. Restano dèi dell'asfalto e a loro si inchina anche Doctor J (in una partita realmente giocata). Incapaci di crescere e di guardare il loro vero io, conosceranno il carcere e la guerra, senza maturare mai. Diventeranno leggende in una New York che cambia faccia, ma che nel cuore nero resta uguale, come i giovani che, nonostante gli anni e il progresso, hanno sempre le stesse debolezze e la stessa ingenuità nell'affrontare una realtà dura, quella della strada.
