Durante il 2020, il mondo è stato scosso dal Covid-19. La pandemia e le misure prese per contrastarla hanno avuto conseguenze per tutti ma hanno anche messo in forte risalto, e in alcuni casi aggravato, le disuguaglianze e gli abusi sistematici esistenti. I lockdown e le quarantene hanno colpito in modo sproporzionato i gruppi marginalizzati, gli anziani e le persone che vivono nell’indigenza. Anche se prosegue la tendenza a criminalizzare la violenza di genere nel diritto interno, le denunce di violenza contro le donne sono aumentate. Molti governi hanno represso il dissenso, talvolta usando come pretesto le misure per controllare il Covid-19. Hanno fatto uso eccessivo della forza per sopprimere le proteste contro la brutalità della polizia e la discriminazione. Hanno messo a tacere le critiche di difensori dei diritti umani e oppositori con nuove limitazioni alla libertà d’espressione e il ricorso alla sorveglianza.
Il sistema di governance globale è stato messo a dura prova, anche a causa degli attacchi di potenti governi alle istituzioni multilaterali. Tuttavia, i leader mondiali avranno l’opportunità di plasmare un futuro post-pandemia più giusto, se metteranno i diritti umani alla base delle misure per la ripresa e la cooperazione internazionale.
