Un giovane combattente torna a casa in Lunigiana alla fine della prima guerra mondiale e trova l’Italia vincitrice ma sconquassata. Siamo negli anni del biennio rosso, a cavallo tra la fine della Grande Guerra e l’inizio dell’era fascista, in una delle zone del Paese dove maggiormente si manifestarono le proteste popolari contro una condizione sociale sempre più insostenibile. La Lunigiana e il territorio di La Spezia sono i luoghi dove il protagonista del libro interagisce con alcuni dei personaggi che hanno contribuito a fare la storia d’Italia. La vita dei contadini della Lunigiana, il lavoro degli operai dei cantieri militari di La Spezia, gli anarchici della Lunezia e i movimenti politici degli Arditi del popolo in contrapposizione ai Fasci da combattimento sono presenti in questo prezioso affresco storico in cui trovano anche risalto le cronache del terremoto di Fivizzano (settembre 1920), la strage del teatro Diana a Milano e i fatti di Sarzana (1921). Fanno infine capolino le vicende di lottatori e pugili che in qualche modo, e con tutte le problematiche di quei tempi, cercarono attraverso lo sport di dimenticare la guerra conclusa da poco.
