BEGINNING AT THE SHORE
Small horses tow the skiff
outward / Eyes
watch the coast recede . . . yet
the landmark only seems less ephemeral than manes
swimming on the wake
The impossible is known in the familiar
Not myth / mouth
The wings
seemed translucent
but sighting me
the gull / rose
floating backward in slow motion
Or did the mist rolling in
simply lift?
Flight seems so simple at first
It pulls or pushes the body
headfirst into time
not by the feet
But the wings clearly spread
open / as they shd
So the limbs grow all ways
into a milk-blue soul
And the horizon snares the oarsman
passing through the starting point
For the start is not less
because / hunger
like a newborn
cries

COMENZANDO EN LA ORILLA
Pequeños caballos conducen el esquife
hacia fuera/ Los ojos
miran la costa retroceder ... mas
la marca sólo parece menos efímera
que las crines
nadando sobre la estela
Lo imposible se da a conocer en lo familiar
Mito, no/ voz viviente
Las alas
parecían translúcidas
pero al espiarme
la gaviota / ascendió
flotando lentamente hacia atrás
¿O fue sólo que la niebla que bajaba
levantó?
Volar parece tan sencillo al comienzo
Tira o empuja el cuerpo
de cabeza al tiempo
no por los pies
Pero las alas claramente se despliegan
abriéndose/ como deben
Así las extremidades se convierten en cada dirección
en un alma de leche azulada
Y el horizonte atrapa al remador
al pasar por el punto de partida
Pues, no es menos el susto
porque /el hambre
grita como un
recién nacido
