After the significant improvements achieved in the quality of surface water as a result of advances in wastewater treatment, the focus of attention has now shifted to the handling of sewage sludge. The ensuing costs are considerable and fundamental questions are yet to be answered. Batch humification of sewage sludge is an economical, nature-like process of transforming sewage sludge into a substrate which can be utilised in various ways. This fundamental analysis of the process is a contribution to the current discussion on the future treatment of sewage sludge.
