Der Titel der Arbeit 'Der Essay als Instrument der bĂŒrgerlichen AufklĂ€rung' orientiert sich an der Einleitung zu einer Anthologie englischer Essays (SCHLÖSSER o.J., S.17). Dort wird gesagt, dass der Essay nach der Glorreichen Revolution, "weitgehend die Funktion der Konsolidierung des (immerhin) Erreichten" (ebd.) ĂŒbernommen hĂ€tte und "fernerhin zu einem Instrument der bĂŒrgerlichen AufklĂ€rung" (ebd.) geworden sei. Diese Charakterisierung wirft gleich mehrere Fragen auf. Da ist zuerst einmal die Frage nach einer zeitlichen Einordnung des zu betrachtenden PhĂ€nomens. 'Ist' bzw. 'war' der Essay in einer bestimmten Weise zu begreifen oder sind nicht vielmehr VerlĂ€ufe seiner Entwicklung zu betrachten? Sodann stellt sich die Frage nach einer Definition des Begriffes 'BĂŒrgertum' in eben dieser Zeit. Was BĂŒrgertum sei, darĂŒber gibt es die unterschiedlichsten wissenschaftlichen Aussagen, zudem sind auch hier mögliche Antworten auf diese Frage zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten immer wieder unterschiedlich zu geben. Des Weiteren und ganz wesentlich stellt sich die Frage, ob der Begriff der AufklĂ€rung fĂŒr England und Schottland ĂŒberhaupt angemessen ist. Immerhin gab es in Großbritannien weder ein Programm der AufklĂ€rung wie in Deutschland und Frankreich, noch gab es im 18. Jahrhundert einen eigenen Begriff und ein Bewusstsein dafĂŒr. Schließlich stellt sich die Frage nach der Funktion des Essays. Ist es richtig, diese Textgattung einfach und unumwunden als 'Instrument' zu betrachten?
