Der Prozess der Unternehmensnachfolge ist maßgeblich geprägt von einem Bruch in der betrieblichen Kontinuität. Dieser kann klein und unbedeutend, aber auch groß und existenzbedrohend sein. Besonders Übergaben an Nachfolger, die nicht aus dem Umfeld des Unternehmens stammen, haben sich in der Vergangenheit als problematisch erwiesen. Im Rahmen eines Pretests mit drei Unternehmen wurden Hinweise für Erfolgs- und Risikofaktoren von Unternehmensnachfolgen untersucht. Auf der Grundlage dieser Erkenntnisse wurde dann ein Modell auf Basis der Balanced Scorecard (BSC) entwickelt, das es ermöglicht, potenzielle Übergaben anhand einer Analyse von Übergeber und Übernehmer auf diese Faktoren hin zu untersuchen und mithilfe eines Scoring-Modells systematisch auszuwerten. Die so entstandene Question-based Balanced Scorecard (QBSC) für die Unternehmensnachfolge bzw. Nachfolge-QBSC, berücksichtigt dabei neben Übergeber und Übernehmer auch Mitarbeiter, Kunden und Lieferanten des Unternehmens bei der Bewertung der Erfolgsaussichten. Anhand drei weiterer Unternehmen, bei denen eine Unternehmensnachfolge anstand, wurde dann eine Evaluierung des Modells vorgenommen.
