Ces jeunes ont participé, de 1997 à 2000, à une étude ethnographique qui a mis l'accent sur leurs pratiques langagières et le sens qu'ils accordent à ces pratiques. La recherche a porté une attention toute particulière à la notion d'identité bilingue, qu'elle déconstruit en vue d'en comprendre la signification pour ces jeunes et d'examiner si cette forme identitaire peut exister en soi en tant que phénomène stable, ou s'il s'agit plutôt d'un phénomène transitoire menant, à plus ou moins long terme, à l'assimilation.Les portraits révèlent que l'identité de ces jeunes est en pleine mouvance, que leurs parcours identitaires sont loin d'être linéaires. L'étude démontre que le concept « d'identité bilingue » est plus complexe que ne le laissent croire, à ce jour, les études quantitatives qui voient dans ce phénomène un pas vers l'assimilation définitive au groupe anglophone dominant.
